VOLERE

Il verbo "volere" in genere si traduce col verbo regolare "to want" per tutti i tempi, escluso il condizionale per cui si usa il condizionale del verbo "to like" (I would like; I'd like).

A volte si può tradurre con gli ausiliari "will" e "would" ma solo in casi particolari:

Per esprimere richieste  si usa l'ausiliare "will";

WILL + HAVE + SOSTANTIVO sia WOULD YOU LIKE + SOSTANTIVO;

Per esprimere forte volontà, ostinazione o deciso rifiuto  si usano "will" per il presente e "would" per il passato (in questo caso will w would vengono pronunciati con enfasi e possiamo trovarli scritti sottolineati o in corsivo).

Will you close the window, please? (N.B. it may indicate impatience)

Would you mind . (formale)

Will you have some more tea?

Would you like some more tea?

If you will smoke (=insist on smoking) strong Spanish cigarettes you can't complain if they make you caught.

The child will not obey. (=refuses to obey)

He wouldn't listen to me. (=refuses to listen)

Un ulteriore uso abbastanza frequente è quello di "would" per indicare abitudine al passato (he would come and see me = he used come and see me).

- he wanted to eat something
- I'd like to go on holiday
- we'd like leave with them

SOGGETTO + VERBO VOLERE + COPLEMENTO OGGETTO + INFINITO
- he wanted me to eat something
- I would like her to go on holiday
- they would like us to leave with them

WISH

I wish you were here with me

I wish you had more luck

I wish you had been there with me

I wish you had had more luck

POTERE

they can spend because they are rich

can/could you do me a favour?

As a boy I could play the piano very well (ABILITA' COSTANTE)

Last night I was able to sleep well (OCCASIONE SINGOLA)

Se denota permesso si preferisce usare, in situazioni formali soprattutto, "may" per il presente e "might" per il condizionale, alle voci mancanti si supplisce con i verbi "to be allowed to" "to be permitted to" che si costruiscono personalmente

may I play your piano?

You may if you can

Might I ask you a question?

Se denota probabilità si usano "may" o "might" e per le voci mancanti si usa "to be likely to" "to be probable to"

what you say may/might be true

take care you may/might fall!

The weather may/might change

CONDIZIONALE PRESENTE + HAVE + PARTICIPIO PASSATO

(should, could, might)

SHOULD HAVE, OUGHT TO

Usiamo should have o ought to per criticare azioni passate delle persone (I should have/ought to have let Shona come).

ought to è più formale rispetto a should have

spesso per fare le domande con should have o ought to ci serviamo del verbo think (do you think I should have phoned?)

CAUSATIVE HAVE

Lo usiamo quando vogliamo parlare di qualcuno chef a qualcosa per noi specialmente in situazioni di servizio (I have my room cleaned once a month).

SOGGETTO + HAVE + COMPLEMENTO OGGETTO + PARTICIPIO PASSATO

Se abbiamo situzioni meno formali possiamo sostituire a have il verbo get.

MAKE AND LET + OBJECT AND INFINITIVE WITHOUT TO

Usiamo make per parlare di obblighi impostici da altri e per parlare di cause (my parents always made me take my sister everywhere; my brother often makes me very angry).

Usiamo let per parlare di permessi o di mancanza di obbligo daparte di altri (I should have let her come with me; my parents let me watch television whenever I like).

Dobbiamo usare allowed to.

BE ALLOWED TO

Usiamo be allowed to per parlare di regole, regolamenti e permessi (you're not allowed to talk during the exams) oppure per fare la forma passive di let (I was allowed to stay the night at the hospital).

be allowed to è la forma passive del verbo allow

non può esser usato con il pronome impersonale it, quando parliamo di regolamenti usiamo sempre la seconda persona you.

SECOND CONDITIONAL

I saw a mugging (aggressione) I'd go to help).

Per parlare di situazioni immaginarie (I wouldn't go to a party unless I had something new to wear).

Per dare consigli (if I were you, I'd buy a new computer).

Al posto del verbo would possiamo usare anche might o could.
