CRITICA VERSO LA SOCIETA' IN DICKENS, WILDE E JOYCE

DICKENS BELONGS TO THE II^ GENERATION OF VICTORIAN NOVELISTS ; LIKE THEM, HE IS CONSCIOUS OF HYPOCRISY OF THEIR OWN TIME AND HE CRITICIZES ALL THE ASPECTS OF SOCIETY. HIS NOVELS MIRROR THE SENSE OF FEAR AND GUILT OF THE MIDDLE CLASSES, BUT IN THIS SENSE, THEY ARE THE MIRROR OF THE CONTRADICTORY VICTORIAN BOURGEOIS IDENTITY. THE NOVELS ARE ALSO AN EXPRESSION OF THE MORAL PURITAN OBBLIGATION FELT BY THE MIDDLE CLASSES AS THE NEED TO SOLVE THE SOCIAL PROBLEMS RAISED BY INDUSTRIALIZATION. IN WILDE THE CRITICISM TOWARDS SOCIETY IS PRESENT IN THE PLAY "THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST" : THIS PLAY IS A SATIRE OF VICTORIAN SOCIETY STARTING FROM THE LACK OF EARNESTNESS OF THE PROTAGONIST AND INVESTING ALL THE PILLARS OF THE VICTORIAN SOCIETY SUCH AS MARIAGE, CHURCH, RESPECTABILITY AND THE ROLE OF THE SEXES. IN JOICE DUBLIN IS REPRESENTED THROUGH ITS INHABITANTS, CHILDREN, YOUNG BOYS AND GIRLS. THE REALITY DESCRIBED BELONGS TO ALL THE SOCIETIES OF THE WORLD OF THAT PERIOD. WITH THE WORD PARALYSIS JOYCE REFERRES TO THE STATE OF MIND OR HIS OWN COUNTRY : HE REFERRES TO SOME ASPECTS OF THE DUBLINERS THAT HE CAN'T ACCEPT, SUCH AS BIGOTRY, ASSOCIATED TO THE PURITAN WAY OF LIFE, NARROWMINDNESS AND IMPOSSIBILITY FOR AN IRISH MAN TO CHANGE HIS OWN LIFE, TO ESCAPE FROM A LIMITED MENTALITY.

STILE DI WILDE, JOYCE E JANE AUSTEN.

WILDE :AS REGARD THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY IT CAN BE READ AS A LATE OFFSPRING OF THE GOTHIC NOVEL BECAUSE OF ITS SUPERNATURAL PLOT: IN FACT THE SUSPENCE IN THE READER, THE SENSE OF MISTERY AND THE UNSPEAKABLE CRIMES UNRESOLVED REMIND US OF THE GOTHIC NOVEL. INSTEAD IN THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST THE LANGUAGE IS VERY INVENTIVE AND THE COMICAL EFFECT AND THE IRONY ARE OBTAINED BY THE USE OF PARADOX, APHORISM AND WIT. JOYCE : HIS STYLE TECHNIQUE AND THE LANGUAGE DEVELOPES FROM THE REALISM AND THE DISCIPLINED PROSE OF THE DUBLINERS, THROUGH AN EXPLORATION OF THE CARACTERS' IMPRESSIONS AND POINTS OF VIEW, TO THE STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS TECNIQUE, USED TO GIVE A REALISTIC FRAMEWORK TO THE CARACTERS' FORMLESS THOUGHTS. HE USES IN HIS WORKS NEW TECNIQUES SUCH AS THE IMPERSONALITY OF THE AUTHOR, THE SYMBOLISM, THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AND THE EPIPHANY. JANE AUSTEN DEALS WITH LOVE IN A VERY CLASSICAL WAY, WITHOUT ROMANCE, IN OPPOSITION TO GOTHIC NOVELS SHE USES A SIMPLE LANGUAGE AND THE CARACTERS ARE ROUND, WHILE IN GOTHIC N. THEY WERE FLAT. AS REGARDS CONTENTS SHE TAKES INSPIRATION BY FIELDING AND RICHARDSON. IN PARTCULAR FROM TOM JONES SHE TAKES THE INTRICACY OF THE PLOT AND FROM RICHARDSON THE DOMINANT FEMALE ROLE IN THE NOVEL AND THE EPISTOLARY FORM. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE IS NARRATED BY A THIRD PERSON OMNISCIENT NARRATOR, EVEN IF THE NARRATOR OFTEN IDENTIFIES WITH ELISABETH'S POINT OF VIEW OR HE SHARES THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE VILLAGE LIKE IN THE SCENE OF THE BALL.
