Federal Government
There era three
independent branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial. The President
is the head of the executive branch end the head of the state. He is elected
by the people to a four-year term and
can only be re-elected once. He must be a native-born citizen of the United
States, and must be at least 35 years old.
The legislative
power lies with Congress, which consists of a Senate, or Upper
House, and a House of Representatives, or Lower House. They make the
laws and discuss the President's decision, which the may or may not approve.
The highest
judicial authority is the Supreme Court. Its nine members are appointed
by the President and serve on the Court for life.

ha il potere legislativo, col consenso del Senato, o Casa Superiore, e la Camera dei Rappresentanti, o Camera di
Legge. Loro fanno le leggi e discutono
le leggi del Presidente, che possono o non approvare.
La più
alta autorità giudiziale è la Suprema Corte. I 9 membri sono
nominati dal Presidente e prestano servizio alla Corte a vita.

Government
The organs of the
Federal Government in Washington deal with matters of general relevance, such
as foreign policy and defence, but each of the fifty
states enjoys a great deal of independence in many other fields, such as
education, social security or the administration of justice. For example, the
death penalty is applied in same states but not in other. Each state of the
Union has its own Constitution, elects its own Governor and is entitled
to make its own laws.

There are two
main political parties in U.S.: the Republican Party, which is more
traditional and conservative, and the Democratic Party, which is more liberal
and supports the rights of the minorities and the lower classes. Their symbols
are, respectively, the elephant and the donkey.

the District of Columbia, is the federal capital and the seat of the main
